2011 PPAC SUMMER ARTS SCHOLARSHIP CONTESTANTS AWAIT RESULTS!!

For the third year in a row, Thistle Cottage Studio in N. Providence, RI, has groomed its' age eligible students to enter the Providence Performing Arts Center's 2011 Summer Arts Scholarship awards competition. With a track record of three winners in two years, TCS's owner and Artistic Director,
Elsie Collins, waits with tense anticipation that one, or more of her students will come home with the prize again this year. The judging process is going on as we speak, and winners will be notified sometime in April, with the annual awards ceremony slated for May. She says, "It is always a very emotionally moving experience for me, to see all of these talented young people, when they make their 45 second presentation of their winning works during the awards ceremony, which takes place on the PPAC stage each year!! We have some truly gifted kids this year, and the competition is steep!!". Only twenty-five winners will be chosen from approximately 300-500 entries from around the state!! Winning students are awarded a generous $500.00 prize, and may use the money to study at the arts organization of their choice. Thistle Cottage Studio has made it to the roster offered by PPAC, as suggestions as to where winning students might take summer classes, right along side RISD and the State Ballet of RI!!
Thistle Cottage Studio will be the choice for Fashion Design classes this summer for our four talented contestants, Elsie M., Ruby S., Anakhayla M., and Michael H. All Rhode Island students between the ages of 11 and 14 years old, may apply each year before the March 4th deadline. They may also apply each year if they do not win, up until they no longer meet the age requirement.
Our newest student, Elsie M., age 12 years old, currently taking sewing classes at TCS, WOWED us this year with three very beautiful costume sketches!! In addition to being an amazing costume designer, she is an extraordinary artist, poet, story writer, and even reads music and plays guitar!!! Ruby S., is currently taking Pattern Drafting I at TCS, and is just about to try on her muslin dress, which will prove her flat pattern. Her three entries consisted of fashion sketches of a casual safari outfit, a red carpet evening gown, and an exotic costume gown inspired by the element of fire. All three sketches were sophisticated beyond her 11 years!! Michael H., currently studying Fashion Sketching, also entered three fashion plates showing two dresses, and a daytime suit inspired by the 60's, and designer Mary Quant, who was responsible for the Mod and Carnaby Street looks. Anakhayla M., age 13 years old, also studying Fashion Sketching at TCS, offered up three very hip fashion choices including a silver, black, and gold cocktail dress, a black and brown polka dotted tunic and tights, and a very sweet, demure little day suit in pink and lavender, with a matching pink cloche hat. This may well be the year of the hat, according to NY runway shows!! This may well be the third year in a row with a winner (or two), for Thistle Cottage Studio!!! We'll keep you posted when the winners are announced in just a few weeks! More contestant photos will be added to this blog post soon! Stay tuned for more!!
